About the Resolution and Color Depth of the Requirements

I'm well aware that the number of possible permutations using an 24-bit, 640px x 480px image are astronomical. (Along the lines of greater that all the electrons in the universe.) However, I'd like to provide a demonstration that still seems impressive to a layperson who doesn't understand the different possible configurations of a 8-bit, 16px x 16px image. I'm open to any suggestions to how best to define the images size that still looks photographic but still puts a (relatively) reasonable limit on the total number of possible permutations.
